Safety & Riding Etiquette
- Gear up, every ride. All The Gear, All The Time — no exceptions on official runs.
- Ride your own ride. Never ride beyond your skill or comfort to keep up. There's no shame in taking it steady.
- Hold staggered formation. Leader takes the left third of the lane, next rider the right third one second back, and so on. Single file through corners, gravel and narrow sections.
- Keep your distance. Minimum two-second following gap; more in the wet or on dust.
- Never overtake inside the group. Hold your position; the road captain sets the pace.
- Signal early and clearly — indicators and hand signals. Pass hazard signals down the line.
- Call the hazards. Potholes, livestock, gravel, pedestrians and stray dogs are everywhere — point them out.
- Full tank, full focus. Fuel up before the meet. No alcohol or substances before or during a ride.
- Lights on. Ride with your headlight on, day and night, for visibility.
- Nobody gets left behind. The road captain leads, the sweep rides at the back. If you drop off, slow down — the sweep will be with you.
- Respect the law and other road users. Speed limits, roadblocks, and paperwork — keep it clean and courteous.
Group Ride Hand Signals
Learn these before your first group ride. The leader gives them; pass them down the line so every rider sees.
Left turn
Left arm extended straight out to the side.
Right turn
Left arm out, forearm up at the elbow, fist closed (or just extend your right arm).
Stop
Left arm out and down, palm facing back.
Slow down
Left arm out, palm down, patting the air.
Hazard on the left
Point at the hazard on the road with your left hand.
Hazard on the right
Point at the hazard with your right foot.
Single file
Left arm raised, one finger up.
Double file
Left arm raised, two fingers up.
Follow me
Left arm swung up and forward over the helmet.
Fuel / comfort stop
Point down at the fuel tank.
Speed up
Left arm out, palm up, lifting upward.
Helmet / comms check
Tap the top of your helmet.
Gear Requirements
The following is mandatory on every official ZimBikers run:
- Helmet — DOT or ECE approved, full-face or modular, in good condition.
- Gloves — full-fingered.
- Riding jacket with CE armour (shoulders, elbows, back).
- Riding trousers or reinforced/armoured jeans.
- Over-the-ankle boots.
- Eye protection — visor or goggles.
Strongly recommended:
- High-visibility vest, especially in low light.
- Waterproofs during the rainy season (Nov–Mar).
Your bike must be:
- Roadworthy with valid registration and paperwork.
- Fitted with working lights, indicators and brakes, and legal tyres.
Code of Conduct
- Respect every rider — regardless of bike, brand, budget or experience. We all started somewhere.
- Zero tolerance for harassment, discrimination or abusive behaviour, on the road or online.
- Look out for each other. Stop for a rider in trouble; nobody rides home alone.
- Represent the club well. How you ride and behave reflects on all of us and on bikers everywhere.
- Honour your commitments — RSVPs, charity pledges and marketplace deals.
- Keep it honest in the marketplace and in the garage — no misrepresentation.
- Dangerous, reckless riding that endangers others will not be tolerated and may lead to removal from the club.
Club Rules / Constitution
Membership is open to motorcycle riders aged 18 and over with a roadworthy machine. Learner riders are welcome under the mentorship of an experienced member. Membership is free and requires a verified email address. Members must abide by this constitution and the Code of Conduct.
The club is run by an elected committee including a President, Road Captain(s) and Events Coordinator. The committee organises rides, manages membership and upholds the rules. Committee positions are reviewed at the Annual General Meeting (AGM).
Every official ride is led by an appointed road captain with a sweep rider at the rear. Riders take part at their own risk and must meet the gear requirements. The road captain may turn away any rider whose bike or gear is unsafe.
Breaches of the Code of Conduct or these rules may result in a warning, suspension or removal from the club at the committee's discretion. Dangerous riding that endangers others is grounds for immediate removal.
ZimBikers, its committee and ride organisers are not liable for any loss, injury, damage or death arising from participation in club activities. Each rider is responsible for their own insurance, licensing and the roadworthiness of their motorcycle.
This constitution may be amended by the committee or by a vote at the AGM. Members will be notified of any changes via the website and club channels.
